Mulch Calculator

Work out how much mulch to buy for a bed.

Mulch by the yard or the bag

Multiply the area by the depth to get a volume. Small jobs are easy to buy by the bag, but for large beds, bulk delivery by the cubic yard is usually cheaper.

Example

With the starting values shown (Bed length 20 ft; Bed width 6 ft; Depth 3 in; Bag size 2 cubic feet), Cubic yards comes out as 1.11. Other results include cubic feet: 30; bags needed: 15.

A depth of 2 to 3 inches suits most beds. Keep mulch away from the stems of plants and tree trunks. Mulch settles over time, so you may want a little extra.
