Density Calculator
Calculate density, mass or volume from the other two.
Mass per unit of volume
Density tells you how much matter is packed into a space. Keep the units consistent: grams with cm³ give g/cm³, and kilograms with m³ give kg/m³. Water is about 1 g/cm³ (1,000 kg/m³).
Example
On the first tab (density) with the starting values shown (Mass 500 g; Volume 250 cm³), Density comes out as 2.
Typical values: aluminium about 2.7 g/cm³, steel about 7.85 g/cm³ and wood roughly 0.4 to 0.9 g/cm³. Objects float in a liquid if they are less dense than it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert g/cm³ to kg/m³?
Multiply by 1,000.
Why does ice float?
Ice is about 0.92 g/cm³, less dense than liquid water.
