Volume Calculator
Find the volume and surface area of common 3D shapes.
Volume formulas
- Box: length × width × height.
- Cylinder: π × r² × height.
- Sphere: 4/3 × π × r³.
- Cone: one third of the matching cylinder, π × r² × height ÷ 3.
Examples
A 5 by 4 by 3 box holds 60 cubic units and has a surface area of 94. A cylinder of radius 3 and height 10 has a volume of about 282.74. A sphere of radius 5 has a volume of about 523.60.
Volume is in cubic units. If your lengths are in centimetres the volume is in cubic centimetres, and 1,000 cubic centimetres equals 1 litre.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a cone one third of a cylinder?
A cone with the same base and height fits exactly three times into the matching cylinder. This is a standard result from geometry.
How do I convert cubic metres to litres?
Multiply by 1,000.
