Bandwidth and Download Time Calculator

Work out how long a download takes at your speed.

Bits, bytes and speed

Internet speeds are measured in megabits per second (Mbps), but files are measured in megabytes (MB). Since 1 byte is 8 bits, a 100 Mbps connection moves about 12.5 megabytes each second. Divide the file size in megabits by the speed to get the time.

Example

On the first tab (download time) with the starting values shown (File size 5; Unit GB; Connection speed 100 Mbps), Time to download comes out as 0 h 6 min 40 s. Other results include in seconds: 400; speed in megabytes per second: 12.5.

Real downloads are often slower than the advertised speed because of network congestion, the server’s speed and protocol overhead. Treat the result as the best case.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my download slower than expected?

Overheads, a busy network, your Wi-Fi or the server can all slow it down.

What is the difference between Mb and MB?

A lowercase b is a bit and an uppercase B is a byte. A byte is 8 bits.
