IELTS Band Score Calculator

Find your overall IELTS band from your four section scores.

How the overall band is calculated

Your IELTS overall band score is the average of your four section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), rounded to the nearest half or whole band.

The rounding rule

  • An average that ends in .25 is rounded up to the next half band.
  • An average that ends in .75 is rounded up to the next whole band.
  • An average that ends in .125 or .375 (and similar) goes to the nearest half band, so 6.125 becomes 6.0 and 6.375 becomes 6.5.

Example

Scores of 7, 6.5, 6.5 and 7 add up to 27. The average is 6.75, which rounds up to an overall band of 7.0.

Universities and visa authorities often ask for a minimum overall band and a minimum in each section, so check the requirement for your target, not just the overall score.
