Mean, Median, Mode and Range Calculator

Paste a list of numbers and get the average, median, mode and range.

Four ways to describe a set of numbers

  • Mean: add everything up and divide by how many values there are.
  • Median: the middle value once the list is sorted. With an even count, it is the average of the two middle values.
  • Mode: the value that appears most often. A list can have several modes, or none.
  • Range: the largest value minus the smallest.

Example

For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 there are 8 values and they add up to 40, so the mean is 5. The middle two values are 4 and 5, so the median is 4.5. The mode is 4 and the range is 9 − 2 = 7.

Which one to use

The mean is pulled up by very large values, so for things like house prices or incomes the median often describes a typical case better. The mode is the only one that works for categories rather than numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste numbers from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Copy a column from Excel or Google Sheets and paste it in. New lines, commas and spaces all work.

What is the difference between mean and average?

In everyday use they mean the same thing. The mean is the sum divided by the count.
