Grade Calculator
Find the final exam score you need, or your weighted course grade.
Two common questions
Students usually want to know either what they must score on the final exam, or what their overall grade is when assignments carry different weights. Each has its own tab.
The formulas
The grade you need is (goal − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with the weight as a decimal. A weighted average is Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight).
Examples
With a current grade of 82%, a final worth 30% and a goal of 85%, you need about 92% on the final. For the weighted average, scores of 90, 85 and 78 with weights of 20, 30 and 50 give 82.5%.
Check how your teacher or school calculates grades, since some drop the lowest score or round differently.
Frequently asked questions
What if the number needed is over 100%?
Then the goal is out of reach unless there is extra credit. Try a lower target grade.
Do the weights need to add to 100%?
No. The weighted average divides by the weights you enter, so partial coursework still works.
