Wind Chill Calculator
Find out how cold it feels with the wind.
How cold it feels
Wind carries heat away from exposed skin faster than still air, so a cold day feels colder when it is windy. The wind chill index estimates the temperature your skin feels. It uses the formula adopted by the US National Weather Service and the Meteorological Service of Canada.
Example
On the first tab (°f and mph) with the starting values shown (Air temperature 20 °F; Wind speed 15 mph), Wind chill comes out as 6.2.
Wind chill applies only to people and animals, not objects, and it assumes you are walking in the shade. At very low wind chills, frostbite can happen on exposed skin within minutes, so cover up and limit your time outside.
Frequently asked questions
Does wind chill change the real temperature?
No. Objects such as cars only cool to the air temperature, and wind chill is how it feels to skin.
When is wind chill valid?
For temperatures of 10 °C (50 °F) or below and wind faster than about 5 km/h (3 mph).
