Data Storage Converter
Convert between decimal (GB) and binary (GiB) storage units.
Two ways to count
Storage makers use decimal units: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems often count in binary: 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes (1,024 × 1,024 × 1,024). That is why a 512 GB drive shows as about 476.8 GiB on your computer.
The prefixes
- Decimal: KB, MB, GB and TB step up by 1,000.
- Binary: KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB step up by 1,024.
- 8 bits make 1 byte.
Example
512 GB equals about 476.84 GiB. Internet speeds are usually quoted in bits per second, so divide by 8 to estimate bytes per second.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my drive show less space than advertised?
The maker counts 1 GB as a billion bytes, but your system may show GiB, which are about 7% bigger.
How many MB are in a GB?
1,000 in the decimal system, and 1,024 MiB in a GiB.
