HECS-HELP Repayment Calculator 2026-27

Find your 2026-27 HECS-HELP repayment under the marginal repayment system.

The marginal system

From the 2025-26 income year, HELP repayments are calculated like tax brackets. You repay a set rate only on the slice of income above each threshold, rather than a percentage of your whole income.

2026-27 thresholds

  • Up to $69,528: no repayment
  • $69,529 to $129,717: 15 cents for each dollar over $69,528
  • $129,718 to $186,050: $9,028 plus 17 cents for each dollar over $129,717
  • $186,051 and above: 10% of your total repayment income

Example

With a repayment income of $85,000, the part above $69,528 is $15,472, and 15% of that is $2,320.80. That is about $89 a fortnight.

Good to know

Repayment income is wider than taxable income, because it adds reportable fringe benefits, reportable super contributions and net investment losses. The thresholds are indexed each year. The calculator estimates your compulsory repayment, which the ATO assesses when you lodge your return, and you can always make voluntary repayments. Check the ATO site for the final figures.

Frequently asked questions

Does the repayment come out of every pay?

Yes, your employer withholds an amount based on your pay and tax-free threshold. The final amount is worked out when you lodge your tax return.

Does a bigger debt mean bigger repayments?

No. Repayments depend only on your income. A larger debt just takes longer to clear.
