Discount Calculator
Work out a sale price, how much you save, or the percentage off.
Two common questions
Shoppers usually want either the final price after a percentage discount, or to find out what percent off a deal really is. This calculator does both with a tab for each.
The formulas
Sale price = original × (1 − discount ÷ 100) and percent off = (original − sale) ÷ original × 100.
Example
An 80 item at 25% off sells for 60, and you save 20. If a shop shows an 80 item reduced to 60, that is 25% off.
Stacked discounts
Two discounts of 20% and 10% do not make 30%. Take 20% off first (multiply by 0.8), then 10% off that price (multiply by 0.9), which equals multiplying by 0.72, so the real discount is 28%.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 20% off?
Multiply the price by 0.80. For 15% off multiply by 0.85, and so on.
Is the discount calculated before or after tax?
That depends on the shop and country. Many shops discount the pre-tax price and then add tax, so use the VAT and sales tax calculator for the final bill.
