Exponent and Root Calculator
Calculate powers and roots, such as 2^10 or the cube root of 27.
Powers
An exponent says how many times to multiply a number by itself. 210 means ten 2s multiplied together, which is 1,024. A negative exponent gives a reciprocal, so 2−3 = 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125.
Roots
A root undoes a power. The square root of 49 is 7, because 7² = 49. The cube root of 27 is 3, because 3³ = 27. In general, the nth root of x equals x1/n.
Good to know
- Any number to the power 0 is 1.
- Even roots of negative numbers are not real numbers, so you will see no result.
- Odd roots of negative numbers are fine: the cube root of −8 is −2.
