How to work with fractions

A fraction has a numerator (top) and a denominator (bottom). The result is always shown in its simplest form, along with a mixed number and a decimal.

The rules

  • Add or subtract: use a common denominator, then add or subtract the tops. 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
  • Multiply: multiply the tops and multiply the bottoms. 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.
  • Divide: flip the second fraction and multiply. 3/4 ÷ 6/8 = 3/4 × 8/6 = 24/24 = 1.

Simplifying

Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common factor. 6/12 has a greatest common factor of 6, so it simplifies to 1/2. The steps under the result show exactly what was done.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter a mixed number like 2 1/3?

Convert it to an improper fraction first: 2 × 3 + 1 = 7, so enter 7 over 3.

Why can't the denominator be zero?

Dividing by zero has no meaning in maths, so a fraction with a zero denominator is undefined.
