Mutual Fund Calculator (Fees and Growth)

See how much fees take from a mutual fund over the years.

Small percentages, big effect

A 1% yearly fee sounds small, but it comes out of your balance every year, including your growth, so its effect compounds. Over decades, fees can take a large part of your investment gains.

Example

Investing 10,000 plus 300 a month for 25 years at 7% grows to about 289,187 with no fees. With a 1% expense ratio it grows to about 245,805, so fees cost about 43,381, or 22.9% of the growth.

Index funds often charge 0.05% to 0.25% a year, while some actively managed funds charge 1% or more. Check the fund’s total expense ratio, any sales loads and trading costs. Past performance does not predict future returns, and this tool uses a steady return.

Frequently asked questions

What is an expense ratio?

The yearly fee a fund charges, as a percentage of your investment. It is taken from the fund's assets, so you do not see a bill.

What is a front-end load?

A sales charge taken when you buy. A 5% load means only 95% of your deposit is invested.
