Find your yearly and monthly student loan repayment for the 2026/27 tax year.
How repayments work
UK student loan repayments are not based on how much you owe. They are a percentage of your earnings above a threshold, taken from your pay with your tax. If you earn below the threshold you repay nothing.
2026/27 thresholds and rates
- Plan 1: 9% above £26,900
- Plan 2: 9% above £29,385
- Plan 4 (Scotland): 9% above £33,795
- Plan 5 (new from 2026): 9% above £25,000
- Postgraduate loan: 6% above £21,000
Example
On a £38,000 salary with a Plan 2 loan, earnings above £29,385 are £8,615, and 9% of that is about £775 a year, or £65 a month.
Because repayments depend on income, a bigger loan balance does not raise your monthly payment. Loans are written off after a set period depending on the plan, so check gov.uk for your plan’s terms. Not sure which plan you are on? Look in your student finance account.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay on my whole salary?
No. You pay only on the part of your earnings above the threshold for your plan.
Can I have two loans at once?
Yes. An undergraduate loan and a postgraduate loan are repaid together, each with its own threshold and rate.
