Retirement Calculator

Estimate your savings at retirement and the yearly income they might support.

What this estimates

The calculator grows your current savings and your monthly deposits at the return you choose, until the age you plan to retire. It then shows what a steady yearly withdrawal could look like, and what the balance would be worth in today’s prices.

Example

Starting at 30 with 20,000 saved and adding 500 a month at 6% a year, you would have about 874,800 at 65. Of that, 230,000 is money you paid in. In today’s money, with 2.5% inflation, the balance is worth roughly 368,600, and a 4% yearly withdrawal would be about 35,000.

Use it carefully

  • The 4% withdrawal figure is a common rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Your own safe rate depends on how long you need the money to last and on markets.
  • Taxes, fees and pensions are not included.
  • Try a lower return to see a cautious case.

Frequently asked questions

What return should I use?

Pick a cautious number after fees. Test a few, for example 4%, 6% and 8%, to see the range rather than relying on one figure.

Why show today's money?

Because prices rise over time. A large future number buys less than it appears to, so the inflation-adjusted figure is a fairer picture.
