Bar Chart Maker (Vertical and Horizontal)

Turn a list of labels and values into a bar chart you can download.

How to make a bar chart

Type your data with one item per line, as a label, a comma and a value, for example Jan, 120. The tool draws a bar for each item with its value on top, and shows a table with each bar’s share of the total. You can sort the bars from highest to lowest, switch between vertical and horizontal, and give each bar its own colour.

Worked example: monthly sales

The default data are six months of sales: 120, 135, 160, 150, 185 and 210. The total is 960 and the average is 160. June is the highest month at 210, and sales rose in four of the five month-to-month changes, with only a dip in April.

Every chart has Download PNG and Download SVG buttons under it, so you can save the image for a report, an essay or a slide. Charts follow your light or dark theme on the page, and the saved image keeps its colours.

Tips for a good bar chart

  • Start the vertical axis at zero, so the bar heights compare fairly.
  • Use horizontal bars when the labels are long. The tool does this automatically, or you can choose it.
  • Sort the bars when the order of the categories does not matter, so the biggest and smallest are easy to see.
  • Use a bar chart for separate categories, and a histogram for the distribution of numeric data.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a bar chart?

Enter one label and value per line, such as 'Jan, 120'. The tool draws the bars and labels them.

What is the difference between a bar chart and a histogram?

A bar chart compares separate categories, and its bars have gaps. A histogram shows the distribution of numeric data, with touching bars.

Should a bar chart start at zero?

Yes. Starting the axis above zero exaggerates differences.

Can I make a horizontal bar chart?

Yes. Choose Horizontal, or leave it on Automatic and the tool switches when labels are long.

Can I download the chart?

Yes, as a PNG or an SVG image.
